What to Watch Winter 2023: A Guide to Series Binge-Watching

The season is upon us. The holidays are over, it’s getting colder, and it’s dark longer than it is light outside. There is only one right way to spend this time of the year—binge watching. If you’re one of the “I don’t watch TV” types, the exit is to your left.

I’ve put together a list of 17 of my recently watched television recommendations to fill your own watch time this winter. Grab your favorite hoodie and a snack; you’re going to be here for a minute!

For a fun-light-hearted-dealing-with-larger-relatable-themes show:

Sex Lives of College Girls OR Never Have I Ever

Mindy Kaling is putting out hit after hit. Quirky female leads and a fairly accurate portrayal of Gen Z characterize both of these wildly successful shows. The series are shorter form episodes (around 30 minutes each), which makes them extra addicting. I am actually watching SLOCG while writing this; probably not the best idea when it comes to focusing, but great for binge-watching.

Sex Lives of College Girls is available on HBO Max, and Never Have I Ever is available on Netflix.

For the best all-around series you’ve seen in a while:

Ted Lasso OR WandaVision

While these shows may not have much in common on the surface, they both left me wanting to watch them, at minimum, 583 times over. Maybe more. Ted Lasso fans are awaiting the release of Season 3 after a cliffhanger of a finale, but WandaVision is part of the Marvel dynasty, making it a limited series. I could go on and on, but just know you will not regret diving headfirst into either of these ASAP!

For a WOW-I-love-Jennifer-Coolidge mystery:

The White Lotus

If you haven’t heard the hype around White Lotus… have you been living under a rock? I can honestly say Season 2 was a lot more enticing than Season 1, but this show is only getting better. The plot follows various groups of hotel guests at a luxury resort chain, The White Lotus, and each season ends with one of their demises. With its first two locations as Hawaii and Sicily, this show is just a aesthetically beautiful as it is odd. If anything, it’s worth a watch for the addicting theme song alone.

For a why-can-I-not-stop-watching-this moment:

Emily in Paris OR Love is Blind

I don’t have much to say about these besides I couldn’t look away. I never intended on finishing these shows, but I did it. I’m not sure if I ever enjoyed what was happening, but I got too sucked in. Do what you want with this information.

Emily in Paris and Love is Blind are available on Netflix.

For a I-know-I’ll-actually-laugh go-to:

The Good Place OR New Girl

These two aren’t new by any means, but I felt the need to include some old-faithfuls. If you haven’t seen these yet, what are you waiting for???

New Girl is available on Netflix.

For a feel-good-cozy night in:

Gilmore Girls

I think if autumn was a show, it would be this one. While it’s best watched when that first fall breeze blows in, it’s a year-round comfort show with about one million episodes. So, you’ll have lots of content to fill those winter nights with this fan favorite!

For a catch-up-with-pop-culture moment:

Harry & Meghan

You know those pop culture moments that center around the release of a TV show or movie? Like if you don’t watch whatever it is, you’re missing some big conversation of what’s happening in the “now” of entertainment—I’m looking at you, Don’t Worry Darling drama. The Harry & Meghan Netflix docu-series is a shining example of this. If you haven’t heard, this documentary is making big waves in the Royal Family and gives a first-time insight into the lives (and honest opinions) of the title couple. A must watch!

For a loveable-characters-but-what-are-they-doing drama:

Jane the Virgin OR Only Murders in the Building OR The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Talk about two shows I could rave about! These three are cream of the crop in writing, plot lines, and unexpected surprises. Their location-based sets are also fun to keep an eye on if you’re familiar with Miami or New York City. Only Murders and Maisel are releasing new seasons soon, so it’s time to catch up before the new episodes drop.

Jane the Virgin is available on Netflix, Only Murders in the Building is available on Hulu, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is available on Prime Video.

For a guilty-pleasure-but-socially-acceptable-reality show:

Love Island OR Selling Sunset OR The Kardashians

Nothing says binge-watching like a good reality show. Especially in the winter when all you’re craving is some sun and the beach, these shows are the fun that this time of year can lack from time to time. If you know me at all, you know Love Island is my personal go-to. It will definitely leave the voice in your head speaking in an Essex British accent for weeks.

Love Island (UK) and The Kardashians are available on Hulu, and Selling Sunset is available on Netflix.
